Lifeguard Training

Lifeguards keep our community safe.  Learn lifesaving skills to ensure patron safety and protect lives.  Minimum age: 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session. Prerequisite swim test must be completed for course participation.

Red Cross Lifeguard/Waterfront Prerequisite:
1. Swim 550 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards without goggles, surface dive, feet-first or head-first in the deep end to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

4. Collect 3 objects from bottom of the pool while swimming 15yds continuously under water.

*Participants must attend all sessions and demonstrate competency in required skills, scenarios, and written exam for certification.

Upcoming Classes:

Lifeguarding/Waterfront – Monday Wednesday and Friday; June 6th through June 17; 4pm-9pm

$225 for members, $250 for community

Must be registered by Wednesday June 1st.

Not looking for a job but still want to get certified? Sign up for a class!

*Although we require a minimum age of 16 to work as a guard at the YMCA, the minimum age to get certified is 15.
